Landscaping Tips for Sacramento Homeowners

“In a nutshell, what kind of beautifying my Sacramento landscape?  I am sometimes asked this rather broad question by homeowners in Sacramento, Roseville & Folsom, and it’s a tough one to answer. There are so many variables in do-it-yourself landscaping, such as budget, skills, your personal design tastes, how you’ll be using your yard, etc. But there are certain steps you can take that are so sound that they readily suggest themselves as answers to this question.

Use Weed Fabric Strategically

Landscape fabric is most useful under gravel or mulch walkways to keep the material from sinking into the soil. Skip the weed barrier fabric in planted areas. It only provides a short-term sense of accomplishment until the weeds start growing in the mulch on top of the fabric.

Create an Edge

This has to be the easiest and cheapest landscaping idea out there. Simply add a stone edge and mulch to pretty up plain flower beds in a snap.

Use Starter Fertilizer

Use a starter fertilizer whenever you plant anything. Starter fertilizers can provide a tremendous boost to new plantings. The best products have low nitrogen, a bit more phosphorous, and most importantly mycorrhizae-beneficial fungi that help to greatly increase the soil area from which plant roots draw their sustenance. A good starter fertilizer combined with good planting technique is an awesome insurance policy.

Light Up the Night

Not only is landscape lighting aesthetically pleasing, it also increases safety by making sure paths (and obstacles) are visible after sunset.

Sit Down & Relax

Add an Outdoor Seating Area Installing a patio near the edge of your lawn, away from the house, provides an outdoor escape. Concrete will do, or you can use stones or pavers. Building it near trees or tall flowers gives the area some privacy, while chairs or benches let you sit or lie down to read or nap.

Plan for Every Season

Here’s a can’t-miss tip for beautifying your Sacramento yard: make sure you’re providing something of interest in each of the four seasons. Do-it-yourself landscaping for 4-season interest begins with a well-researched plant-selection plan. The goal is to have flowering trees and/or shrubs throughout spring and summer, fall foliage in autumn and good structure in winter.

How To Stay Young Looking

Looking Young Starts From Within

Staying young and healthy is possible for everyone!

Aging does not have to be an expected way of life for anyone. We can influence and control the aging in our looks of our face and our bodies. Learn techniques and tools that can aid in your intentions for staying youthful, healthy, and strong.

Even though you may age ‘chronologically’, understand that there is also to consider a ‘ biological age’. Biological age, also called physiological age, is a measure of how well or poorly your body is functioning relative to your actual calendar age. Chronological age refers to the actual time a human has been alive, while biological age refers to how old that human seems.

It is to your advantage that you may have had many birthdays and candles on your cake- because of the wisdom that you have gathered over the years past, but to have a young biological age would be an added bonus!

Accept the many years that you’ve lived as a blessing, with the gifts of wisdom- and use this positive attitude to have an appreciation, grace, and love for yourself. This self-love will in turn manifest itself in your appearance and manner as a quiet calmness and confidence of tranquility and peace- beyond which any money can ever buy, or nor can any expensive skin cream ever duplicate. Have you seen how some well seasoned men, or women, are admired for their inner beauty and ability to tackle any job with ease? It’s the inner knowing and trust that all is well.

As Kate Winslet, the actress, was quoted as saying in the Porter Magazine, “I’m baffled that anyone might not think women get more beautiful as they get older. Confidence comes with age, and looking beautiful comes from the confidence someone has in themselves.”

What Science Says About Aging

Have you gone to your high school reunion and saw that most of your classmates are hard to recognize, but a few you may still remember as they look the same back in your school days?

Harvard Medical School did research on aging and their results found that some people in the study looked younger than their true age because of a vital component they refer to as the “younger gene”. This research was conducted by Dr. Alexa Kimball, a Harvard dermatology professor. She found that the ‘younger gene”, the recipe for genetically youthful skin, was present in 10 percent of the white Americans, and in around 20 percent of Black Americans. Even so, do not feel all is lost, as this was only one of the ways in keeping a youthful appearance.

How Antioxidants Prevent Aging

There is growing evidence that antioxidants are the key to slowing the aging process. Studies show that the antioxidants protect the brain from free radicals.  What are free radicals?  Free radicals have been described as the unstable molecues produced by the the body’s use of oxygen: free radicals are harmful because they weaken the cell walls and damage the cells of the body, the brain included.

The natural antioxidants in our body begins to decline at age 20. Antioxidants have the ability to stabilize or deactivate free radicals before they attack the cells.

Oxygen Helps Our Health

I am a firm believer in utilizing oxygen for our health.  One should always consciously breathe with full breathes to allow full oxygen into our bodies.  Oxygen is what helps keep our cells running properly.  Our cells help to protect, transform, and repair our bodies- and they need oxygen to do that- so keep breathing, especially in times of stress!
